What is Self-Care?
Demi LizzannIn its most simply stated definition: Self Care is the standard practice of maintaining Self-Respect, Self-Empowerment, Self-Discovery and overall Well-Being.
Oftentimes Self-Care is embraced when one falls below their normal functioning caliber and feels the need to kick-start their way back to “normalcy”. These acts of Self-Care usually are something that doesn’t directly solve the problem but initiates the discovery of the solution.
Self-Care can take the form of the seemingly mundane - such as Cleaning your space, Taking a Shower, Journaling or even simply Resting. Even so, these tasks compound extraordinarily to bring peace, clarity, and completeness to our being.
The approach to Self-Care should always be respected and offered one’s full presence. It is the act of balancing highly engaging activities with sincerity and patience that brings forth restoration to the Mind, Body, and Spirit. The common perception of Self-Care is the more stress the bigger the Ticket of Self-Care and some people even count themselves out of Self-Care completely due to it being what they consider to be an unnecessary task compared to their other responsibilities, and even worse some do not believe themselves worthy of Self-Care for reasons linked to trauma and societal conditioning. And to that - and any other reason one can assemble - compassion and understanding is offered. Self-Care is an intrinsic value of Life and it is everyone's Birth-right to embrace moments of self maintenance to ensure their quality of life.
When Self-Care is seen as a Foundational practice it wields the potential for peaceful presence into every situation one may encounter. Self-Care is an active practice of meeting with yourself where you are at and asking: what of your being is needed to make the shifts required to embody your potential for peace and fulfillment?
The trend of Self-Care as a Movement began to counteract the cultural norm to succeed by means of going beyond one's capacity. By partaking in such destructive behaviors it ensures the need to experience the other side of the spectrum, that being reclaiming your energy. When the shift to peace , in balance with productivity is embraced , one realizes that these characteristics operate in tandem. By creating distinct spaces to serve yourself as well as others, a discipline and practice is implemented that does not allow for the actions to counteract but to rather flow.
Self-Care is NOT overindulgence, carelessness, or shutting the world out. Self-Care is an opportunity to integrate all of the ways you have come to know how to serve you Best & operating from your highest discernment in this now-moment. Self-Care is the nurturing of Traumas imparted on the Mind & Body. It is the reclamation of one's whole being as Pure. It is being honest with your Shadow Elements & honoring the opportunity to bring light & care to the places that need it most.
Self-Care is reaffirming your boundaries & honoring the way you use your energy. It is a surrender to that which you can change & forgiveness for that which you can not. It simply affirms your relationship with yourself.
Self-Care does not look the same everyday, it is an evolving and adaptable practice of nourishing your character and being present to your needs as you become more of who you are. It is a healing act of releasing attachment to the perception of who you show up as & the refinement of realizing who you have always been.
